Laser-Jet or Ink-jet printer, Which One Is Best For Your Home Office?

HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fwBesides the computer, another common piece of equipment for the home office is the printer, whether it’s a multifunctional printer that combines printing, copying, scanning, and faxing or just the plain printing function. But I believe most of the printers used in the home office would be multifunctional printers (MFP).  To further distinguish the printer types technology-wise, there are ink-jet printers and laser-jet printers.

So putting aside the functional issue which printer should you choose: an ink-jet or laser-jet printer? In this discussion, I strictly shared my opinion based on my own experience, so it may be biased, but I hope that you may still find it useful for your purchase decision. I have owned both ink-jet and laser-jet MFP printers, but currently, the one on my home office desk is the HP Laserjet Pro M127FW Wireless All-in-One Monochrome Printer. Prior to this I had the EPSON WF2540 which is a color ink-jet MFP printer and it’s broken in just about a year of infrequent use besides its quality issue, let me explain.

Actually, prior to the EPSON WF2540, I had an HP ink-jet MFP printer and it lasted quite a while before it broke, a lot longer than the EPSON WF2540 though. Anyway, the initial user experience is good when I bought the EPSON WF2540. It can be set up to print wireless and print both sides manually. However, after a while, the major shortcoming of the ink-jet printer showed up, since I only print once in a while, sometimes not printing for several weeks, the black ink printer head got blocked with dry ink. I tried the built-in print head cleaning function; replaced it with a brand-new ink cartridge, but the problem still couldn’t be fixed. OK, at least I can still scan the document or print to Adobe PDF to save the document or a purchase receipt into a pdf file… so I thought, but soon after, the scan auto feed mechanism broke down too, strange noise came out from the printer, which I really don’t get it since I rarely use this printer, so why it broke down so fast? Or maybe it is just my bad luck getting a lemon product.

Because of that bad experience with the EPSON printer, I decided to do some research on getting a new MFP printer. After learning the lesson about the dry ink problem, I decided this time to get a laser-jet printer. Instead of being in the liquid form like the ink-jet printer, the “ink” in the laser-jet printer cartridge is in the powder form, which will not dry up, so it’s very long-lasting even if you don’t print for a long time. Also because of the quality issue with the EPSON WF2540, I decided to go back to HP, and I picked the HP Laserjet Pro M127FW Wireless All-in-One Monochrome Printer. The reason I decided on this black-only printer is that I don’t really need to print in color, so it’s cheaper. Another reason is I have given up printing photos on my own printer, it actually cheaper to have your photos printed at Costco or Walgreen and usually they can be picked up the next day. Please note that a laser-jet printer generally costs more than an ink-jet printer within the same functionality and size. The HP Laserjet Pro M127FW Wireless All-in-One Monochrome Printer currently costs about $10 more than the color EPSON WF2540 on Amazon.

Another reason I like about the HP Laserjet Pro M127FW Wireless All-in-One Monochrome Printer is its form factor. It is about the same size as the EPSON WF2540 but a bit taller. It’s compact and does not occupy too much space on my 63-inch wide sit-stand desk along side my 27-inch LCD display and a banker’s lamp and still has a bit of space to spare. Since it’s also wireless, I can move it to another location if needed to. One thing to note is that the two side manual printing does not work if your computer still runs the Windows XP operating system, but works fine with my Windows 10 laptop computer. So far the printer works flawlessly on printing and scanning and I am pretty happy with the purchase.

Oh, almost forgot to mention, I bought the HP Laserjet Pro M127FW Wireless All-in-One Monochrome Printer at Best Buy, not on Amazon and they do price matching with Amazon now, it’s about time.

Anyway, it really depends on your printing needs & budget when deciding on which type of printer to purchase for your home office. Below is a list of the top 10 selling laser & inkjet printers on Amazon currently:

Top 20 Best Selling Laptop PCs on Amazon

Are you looking for a laptop computer? Recently I am looking for a lightweight laptop and I finally bought the Acer Aspire R13 13.3″ R7-371T-762R Touchscreen 2-in-1 Laptop.
I opted for the 512 GB Solid-State Drive version. 256GB is on the low side and after installing a few programs there will not be much storage space left. However, most of the applications are now cloud-based these days, 256GB may be enough for you and you will save some $$. So far I really like the computer and have not regretted the purchase. If you are looking for a lightweight touchscreen laptop PC, check it out to see if it suits your needs.

As of this posting, below is the list of the top 20 best-selling laptop computers on Amazon maybe you will find useful in helping you make the purchase decision.

Book Recommendation: “How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World Kindle Edition”

I learned about this book from a financial news letter I subscribed a while back. I really enjoyed reading it and I highly recommend it if you want to learn how to achieve freedom from the government; freedom from bad relationships; freedom from insecurity…etc., just to name a few, then this book is for you. Go check it out.

Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard

microsoft-sculpt-keyboardRecently I have an ergonomic evaluation done on my office work station. At the end of the evaluation, the Ergonomics Assessment Specialist recommended the Microsoft Sculpt Keyboard to me. In about a week, I received the keyboard and set it up right away. I must say the setup process is very quick & simple, just plug in the USB transmitter, pulled out the battery barrier ribbon on the keyboard and the separate numeric keypad and it’s working immediately.  No software installation is needed, in fact, there is no software come with the package.

I had a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard prior to the Microsoft Sculpt Keyboard, it was heavily used and the letters on several keys were worn out and can’t be seen anymore. However, the main reason the Ergonomics Assessment Specialist recommended the  Microsoft Sculpt Keyboard is that the keyboard is more compact and with a separate numeric keypad. The Ergonomics Assessment Specialist recommended that my mouse should be as close to my keyboard as possible.

Anyway, I couldn’t wait to try typing after setting up the keyboard and I immediately like it better than the old keyboard. The typing feel more like on my laptop PC’s built in keyboard but it’s much easier to position my fingers for more accurate typing. I also like the separate numeric keypad, very handy for short-hand numeric input. Another handy feature I like is the calculator launch key, just press it and the Windows’s calculator will open up on the screen. The calculator launch key is on the keyboard and the separate keypad. With the compact size, it saves desk space too, which is another plus over the old keyboard. I am seriously thanking about replacing the keyboard in my home office with the Microsoft Sculpt Keyboard as well. but if I do so, I will get the the version which comes with the wireless mouse as well, just cost a little bit more but if you don’t already have a mouse you like, it’s well worth the extra cost.

The other ergonomic keyboard worth mentioning is the Kinesis Freestyle2 Ergonomic Keyboard. I was recommended this keyboard before and actually tried it, however it will take time to adjust to the key layout on this keyboard and in my fast pace office setting, I don’t have the time to adjust to it while trying to assist clients over the phone and typing at the same time, that’s why I abandoned it and kept the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard until I got the Microsoft Sculpt Keyboard. It costs more and other users learned to like it, so I guest if you can adapt to the change on the keyboard layout quickly, this could be a great keyboard for you.

Anyway, just because I like the Microsoft Sculpt Keyboard, it may not be for you. You have to try it out to see which one fits you. Remember, having good office ergonomic setup will increase your productivity and reduce the chance of repetitive movement injuries.

No Health No Wealth – Natrol JuiceFestive Daily Veggie & Fruit Supplement

We at sohosos.com always advocate health and fitness first beyond all other achievements in our lives, thus the saying No Wealth Without Health. One way of keeping ourselves healthy is to eat well-balanced meals so that we can get the proper nutrition we need to perform our daily jobs and enjoy our life. However, not all of us have the luxury of time and know how to prepare well-balanced meals every day while juggling busy schedules.

Take me as an example, I rarely eat out and cook meals myself most of the time, but I find it hard to do this every day in order to keep the dishes fresh and frankly I just don’t have the time to cook every day. So what ends up is that I usually cook one big meal which is enough to last me several days. And sometimes I run out of vegetables and I am not a big fan of eating fruits, so as you can see, my nutrition is not that well balanced, especially in the vegetable & fruit food group. Because I am aware of the issue, I have been searching for nutritional supplements but unable to find a supplement which can supply both the veggie & fruit for meeting the daily nutritional need, at least not afford-ably and by the way, I am not a big fan of any kind of juicy.

Anyway, I finally found a supplement while shopping at a local Costco warehouse which I believe meets my requirement of easy to take and affordable. The supplement I found is the Natrol JucieFestiv selling for $19.99. You can also purchase it on Amazon by visiting the link below but it’s slightly more expensive at this writing: Natrol JuiceFestiv, 240 Capsules (120 FruitFestiv Capsules and 120 VeggieFestiv Capsules – made with organic fruits and vegetables).

What sold me of this supplement is the specification on the bottles: 23 fruits, 18 veggies, and 5 grains & greens, plus antioxidants, probiotics & digestive enzymes! By the way, you can also find this supplement on Costco.com. And I totally agree with the product statement on the Costco website: “Getting the daily recommended 7 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables every day as recommended by the USDA can be a daunting task. Knowing what vitamins, antioxidants, and nutrients come from which fruit and vegetables is complicated. Additionally, most people do not come close to having the time to prepare and consume all the fruits and vegetables the USDA recommends…“. The other plus is this supplement is made with organic fruits and vegetables!

To be honest, I have been taking this supplement for only about a week and so far I have been feeling great, at least it seems to give me peace of mind that this supplement may help in meeting my daily veggie & fruit requirement to improve my health and not breaking the bank like other supplement products.

Starting a New Business? Check Out This Great Resource!

If you are in the process of starting a business you will need to decide on the form of business you will be operating in. To my understanding, there are basically six types of business structures: Sole Proprietorship; Limited Liability Company (LLC); Cooperative; Corporation, S Corporation & Partnership. You should consult with your lawyer and accountant to decide which business entity is best for you. You can also have your lawyer file the application for you. However, if you like me prefer to do it online, (can you find anything which can’t be done online these days? ) I found this great company from a business podcast, they can do it fast and affordable. The company is Northwest Registered Agent LLC.

Why do I recommend them? because I used their service myself. I also tried to file the LLC with another online company but found out their online form is much longer and requires much more detail as compared to Northwest Registered Agent LLC.

Anyway, as with any online service or purchase, your experience may vary, and you are welcome to post your comment to share your experience.

If you like to learn more about the different types of business entities, the SBA website provides some great information.

Excellent Sit/Stand Desk & High Chair Combination on Budget

After months of researching, I finally decided & purchased a sit/stand desk and a high chair to go with it. The winners are the Bekant sit/stand desk from Ikea and the Deluxe Mesh Back Drafting Chair from Costco.

There are other choices of sit/stand desks available online such as on Amazon, one of them is the ApexDesk 71″ W Electric Height Adjustable Standing Desk. However, the winning decision factors for me are the size, price, hands-on experience, and ease of return.

First, the size of the desk, the dimension of the Ikea Bekant sit/stand desk is 63×31.5″, and the dimension of my old non-sit/stand desk, incidentally also an Ikea product is about 59×31.5″. I actually need a little bit more length on the desk and 63″ is the perfect length sitting next to my bookshelf, as with the 71″ Apex desk,  I would have to relocate my bookshelf which would be a hassle.

Ikea Bekant Sit/Stand Desk

Most sit/stand desks cost $500 or more, the price of an Ikea Bekant sit/stand desk when I purchase it is $489 for the black-brown, black color. The white color one is $20 less. So the price range is within my budget for a sit/stand desk, the Apex sit/stand desk is about $599.99 last checked. By the way, other color choices are available for the Ikea Bekant sit/stand desk, but some of them are only available through their online purchase which costs $99 more for the delivery. By the way, the Ikea Bekant sit/stand desk can raise up to 48″, which is more than enough for me since I am not tall. The Apex sit/stand desk can go up to 50″.

When I found out Ikea has the sit/stand desk on their website, I decided to go to the Ikea store not too far from where I live. I was able to actually see it and put my hands on it to see how it works. After pressing the up & down button a few times, I am quite satisfied with how smoothly & quite it operated. Right then I thought to myself this is it. However, the desk stands were out of stock that day and I had to wait a few days before I actually bought them. With other online selling sits/stands desks, I can only see the pictures and rely on the product description and buyer reviews, it would be a great agony when I found out the desk is not the right fit for me after it’s been delivered, which leads to the easy of the return part of my purchasing decision.

Ikea Bekant Sit/Stand Desk

Ikea offers a 90-day return/exchange policy and a one-year warranty which to me is decent. However, since they have a store close to me, the return is much easier to deal with if I need to return it due to defect, in contrast with the online purchase of other sit/stand desks, which I will have to repackage it securely to send it back,  and who knows how long I have to wait to get the replacement or refund…I am getting a headache just thinking about the ordeal. However, this is not to say that those online sit/stand desks are not worth the effort totally, some buyers are very happy with their purchase.

Also, I like to mention the setup experience of the Bekant sit/desk, as you may know, most furniture from Ikea requires assembly by the purchaser at home. You may think the sit/stand desk has moving parts so it must be pretty complicated to set it up, but I found the assembly instruction is very easy to follow, and by far the easiest furniture/equipment assembly I have ever done so far. Even though the instruction states the setup process should be done by two people, I did it all by myself. By the way, you can place the up/down push button on either the left or right-hand side of the desk which is nice. The desk also comes with two hard plastic keys/rods (one is for spare) which you have to insert into the push button base to operate the button, this is good for preventing kids from playing with the push button, a good safety feature I must say.

Deluxe Mesh Back Drafting Chair

Deluxe Mesh Back Drafting Chair

I love the sit/stand desk so much that after about a week or so of using it I started to worry about the wear & tear on the motor already, due to my often “obsessive-compulsive disorder symptom”. So I figured why not get a high chair? but it has to be inexpensive since I have already spent considerably a large sum of money on the sit/stand desk which by the way is worth every penny. After doing a bit of research, I found the Deluxe Mesh Back Drafting Chair from Costco.com.

I used the same purchase decision-making criteria as the sit/stand desk. The price of the chair is only $94.99 when I purchase it. Even though there are only a few buyer reviews on this product on Costco’s website but the rating is pretty high. Since Costco has a very liberal return policy and I can return it to a Costco warehouse near me, I decided to purchase it.

It arrived about a week later since it was an online purchase. I quickly found out the assembly is a lot more frustrating than the Bekant sit/stand desk.  The instruction is not as well written & illustrated as the Bekant sit/stand desk. It took me a while to figure out that I should insert the foot stand from the bottom up into the support rod before inserting the support rod into the chair stand. And one of the screw nobs was pre-screwed in the wrong part which made me think the washers are missing from the other screw nob. At one point I almost wanted to give up and return the chair to the Costco warehouse. With perseverance and ingenuity;-), I finally figured out how to put it together and all is good. One of the buyer’s reviews is accurate on the strong odor of the chair. However, the smell has dissipated considerably after a day or two.

Now after setting the sit/stand desk to the desired standing height, I don’t have to adjust it up and down often which I believe can lower the wear & tear on the motor.

The whole idea of the sit/ stand desk is that you don’t have to sit down all the time while working at your desk. A recent research report states that even if you work out/exercise for an hour every day, the benefit of working out will be canceled out by sitting idle for a long period of time. And people who sit for a longer period of time have a 50% higher chance of heart attack than people who alternate sitting and standing.

Anyway, this is my personal experience on the Bekant sit/stand desk from Ikea and the Deluxe Mesh Back Drafting Chair from Costco.com. I believe there are other great sit/stand desks & high chairs out there, please share your experience if you come across one.

Last Updated: 11/29/2021 –

I have owned the Ikea Bekant sit/stand desk for a little over two years now, what’s my thought on it? Get a hand-crank one instead!! Now the motor has the issue of raising the desk. The desk can’t lower or raised effectively anymore. It can only be raised a little bit with each press of the up button, continuously pressing the up button won’t work anymore. Fortunately, with the high chair, I don’t really need to adjust the desk anymore once I found the optimum height. So, my final thought on the sit/stand desk is to get a manually hand-cranked one with a high chair. It’s much cheaper, and the money you save is enough to buy the high chair with spare change.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked at home most of the time now, and I decided to purchase another sit-stand desk so that I can separate my personal work from other office-related work. This time I chose the VIVO Height Adjustable 63 x 32 inch Stand Up Desk. It’s a hand-cranked version. It actually does not take much effort & time to raise or lower it, and it costs about 50% less than the electric version. The desk setup video instruction on the Amazon product page is very helpful.  I highly recommend it!

By the way, I just realized how great the Grammarly Tool is for helping me with writing. I found so many typos and grammar issues when I first wrote this post since I didn’t know about this tool. It’s quite embarrassing. You can read my blog post regarding the Grammarly Tool if you like to find out more about this great writing assistance tool.

Quick Ergonomic Mice Review

Computer usage these days is often inseparable part of our personal & office life. Even though more & more computers come with touch screens but the mouse is still the best-pointing device and for executing menu commands. And since we often use the mouse for a long period of time, getting a comfortable & ergonomically designed mouse really helps in improving productivity & reducing health risks. Below I like to list three commonly used mice in an office setting that should be adopted for personal home use as well.

Goldtouch USB Mouse

Goldtouch KOV-GTM-R ERGONOMIC MOUSE RIGHT-H USB

If you like the more traditional type of mouse, this GoldTouch Wired USB mouse is quite good. Of course, you can opt for the wireless version, but I personally prefer the wired version. It’s more responsive and you don’t have to worry about running out of batteries. You can check it out here on Amazon: Goldtouch KOV-GTM-R ERGONOMIC MOUSE RIGHT-H USB

The VerticalMouse 4 (Right handed mouse) by Evoluent helps avoids forearm twisting for comfort and good health. The shape is thoughtfully sculpted for uncompromised comfort and easy-to-reach programmable buttons. No finger contortions are needed to operate the buttons. For a person who is used to the conventional shape mouse like the Goldtouch mouse, it takes a little bit of getting used to the operation at the beginning. The cursor pointing may not be as precise as the conventional shape mouse. Check it out here for the best price: Evoluent VerticalMouse 4 “Regular Size” Right Hand (model # VM4R) – USB Wired

RollerMouse Pro2

RollerMouse Pro2

I just found out this type of mouse recently and to be honest I have not used it myself, but some users claimed it’s the best they have ever used. One thing for sure it’s probably the most expensive mouse, but I’d say it may be well worth it if it can make you more efficient and suit your ergonomic needs. Check out the best price offer here: RollerMouse Pro2- Black
