Excellent Budget Unlocked Smartphone – The Huawei Honor 5X with FingerPrint Sensor

I have been looking for a budget smartphone for a while to replace my more than 5 years old Windows 7.5 phone. I like the Windows phone, it’s very reliable and easy to use, the only department which is lacking is the availability of the apps. I thought about getting an iPhone, but the price is over my budget. So the search for the perfect budget phone had been dragged on for a while, until I came across an eBay daily deal email featuring the Huawei Honor 5X Metal Body Unlocked Smartphone for $159.99 by Newegg.com. By the time of this posting the offer is no longer available and is back to the regular price of $199.99. But even with the regular price, I still believe it’s well worth the price for it’s impressive features as described on the product page on Amazon.com:

  • Unlocked Dual SIM LTE smartphone with three card slots. Supports nano-sim, micro-SIM, and a microSD card up to 128GB. Works with AT&T and T-Mobile Networks.
  • Sleek, robust housing crafted from aircraft-grade aluminum made with four metal finishing processes.
  • An accurate fast fingerprint sensor improves with time and unlocks in 0.5 Seconds. Set your fingers as shortcuts to call contacts and take photos.
  • Powered by Android 5.1 Lollipop with 16GB Internal memory and 2 GB RAM. A Qualcomm 64-bit Octa-Core Processor renders a smooth, responsive experience.
  • A Picture perfect 5.5-Inch, 1080P full HD display can Show off your 13MP Camera pictures with shooting modes like time-lapse, slow-motion, and perfect-selfie.

Anyway, I have received the phone and have been playing with it for several days now. All I have to say that I am very happy with purchase. Huawei is a Chinese company and the equivalent of Cisco Systems, Inc. in the United States, except Huawei also makes smartphones now. I know that many of you may be skeptic about Made in China products and rightly so due to media bias and misunderstanding. Yes, most cheap Chinese products have poor quality, you get what you pay for as the saying goes, but not with this Huawei phone. Let’s put this cellphone review in a different perspective in regards to why Huawei will be a very competitive company in the smartphone market.

As you may recall, Apple stock fell 14 days in a row as of 05/09/2016 to $92.79 and since recovered a little bit to $95.22 as of this posting. And the revenue dropped the first time in 13 years with the profit dropped about 22% as well. One of the reason the Apple stock is not doing so well is because Apple’s sales dropped about 26% in China, Taiwan and HongKong. In the meantime, Huawei has the #1 smartphone market share in China. And in the past year, Apple paid Huawei for its 769 patents while Huawei paid Apple for its 98 patents as to illustrate who’s making big progress in research & development.

From 2011 to 2015, Apple was making a great stride in the smartphone market share around the world, and half of that came from China. And in the last quarter in 2014, China became the largest market for Apple which accounted for 35% of Apple’s total sales exceeding the market share in the United States. However, all has changed recently, several Chinese smartphone brands have risen on top of the market share with Huawei being the top brand with about 24.4% of the total Chinese market share exceeding Apple’s 22.2%. In the first quarter of 2016, Chinese smartphone brands for the first time have a bigger market share than Apple and Samsung combined in China. This shows that Made in China is no longer equates to low tech cheap products.

huawei honor 5xBack to the phone review, one very impressive feature of the Huawei Honor 5X is the finger print sensor. It’s very accurate and responsive and its placement is quite ergonomic allowing for one hand operation, which I think is better than the iPhone 6S’ finger print placement. You can also assign different operation shortcuts to the finger print sensor.

Even though this phone is inexpensive, I still recommend you to get a cell phone case and the screen protector, which I did and happy with the following recommendation.

For the case, I bought the TUDIA Ultra Slim Full-Matte ARCH TPU Bumper Protective Case for Huawei Honor 5X (Gray)which is a very snug fit and doesn’t add much bulk to the phone.

As for the screen protector, I highly recommend the Huawei Honor 5x Screen Protector Spigen® [Tempered Glass] [2 Pack]. It is by far the easiest smartphone screen protector I have ever used. Succeed at the first try in about two minutes without any bubbles.

Will I buy an iPhone in the future? Yes, because I need to use its killer app Facetime. Huawei for business use and iPhone for personal use, perfect!! 🙂
