Fake Amazon Reviews?

According to the Amazon Insider Newsletter: “A newly published profile of a woman who spends her days giving 5-star reviews to low-quality products on Amazon reveals how third-party sellers and shoppers are gaming the system together. The woman buys products from Amazon with her own credit card (an Amazon-branded rewards card so she gets extra bonuses for the purchases), and after she publishes her “verified purchase” 5-star reviews, the merchants reimburse her for the amount she spent, and lets her keep the products. She has spent more than $15,000 on Amazon this year, leaving reviews for more than 700 products and bolstering their rankings on the marketplace. The woman told BuzzFeed News she’s helping brands grow their Amazon businesses. “I’m just a pawn in their marketing scheme,” she said. — BUZZFEED NEWS

Why it matters: This woman is just one of many writing fake reviews on Amazon and skewing the rankings of recommended products. Earlier this year, one reporter found more than 150 private Facebook groups where sellers openly exchange free products for 5-star reviews.”
